# GTM Engineering / Forward Deployed Engineer

Forward-deployed engineers, GTM engineering, and the plain-language version of what we do.

Joey SterlingAugust 2026

Our front page mentions two industry terms: forward-deployed engineers and GTM engineering. Both are real, both are established, and both describe work we do. Here is what they mean, and why we don't lead with them.

### Forward-deployed engineers

Palantir invented the role. A forward-deployed engineer is a software engineer who works inside the customer's business instead of back at the vendor's office — sitting with the people who own the problem, wiring the technology into their actual systems, and staying until it works. [Palantir's own description of the job](https://blog.palantir.com/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-palantir-forward-deployed-software-engineer-45ef2de257b1) is worth reading: the point of the role is that software creates no value until someone fits it to one specific organization.

The AI labs reached the same conclusion. [OpenAI hires forward-deployed engineers](https://openai.com/careers/search/?q=forward+deployed+engineer) to take frontier models into customers' production systems, and [Anthropic does the same](https://thenewstack.io/forward-deployed-engineers-ai/) for companies building on Claude. The most advanced technology companies in the world decided that the model alone is not the product — the person who embeds with your business and makes it work is.

### GTM engineering

GTM engineering — go-to-market engineering — is newer. [Clay coined the term in 2023](https://www.clay.com/blog/gtm-engineering) for a role that builds the revenue machine instead of staffing it: connecting data, enrichment, outreach, and automation so that finding and reaching customers is a system, not a pile of manual work. Since then it has become one of the fastest-growing job titles in technology.

### Why we don't lead with them

Because most of the businesses we work with should never have to learn them.

If you run a retail or commerce business, you don't need the vocabulary. You need someone who knows business, knows your current stack, and knows how to fit new technology into both — so the tools you keep hearing about turn into more time, more money, and a better-run company. That is what a forward-deployed engineer does. You just shouldn't have to say it.

And if you are a technology company that knows exactly what these words mean and needs the capacity — forward-deployed work with your customers, GTM systems that run without adding headcount — that is the same work, done for you.

Either way, the plain version holds: we are people who help you win. [Start a conversation](https://black4.ai/#contact).
